1RR 2.09a - Artemisia's Shell Cup
The painting shows Artemisia she lived in the 3rd Century BC. and was married to her brother, king Mausolus. After his dead she was offered a cup in the shape a shell which contained a brew with his ashes. In testimony of her union Artemisia drank it up. She made Mausolus grave into a monument. The word 'mausoleum' stems from this story. Because Rembrandt painted this work in the same year he got married, it is assumed that the wanted to symbolize marital fidelity with it.
